For our very excellent report of Mr Seddon’s speech, we arc indebted to our contemporary, the West Coast Times. Owing to the length of the Premier’s speech at Hokitika, we are compelled to hold over a good deal of local matter. At his meeting last night Mr Seddon met with a perfect ovation, the large audience again and again cheering him lustily. The Timaru Harbor Board in another column of this issue invite tenders for 500 debentures of £IOO each, bearing 4 per cent interest. In our fourth page will be found an admirable poem from the pen of Pope Leo —a review of the past, and prayer for the future.
During the visit of tlio Eight lion, the Premier to Grcymouth, Mr. Guinness, interviewed him on behalf of those engaged in the sleeper-cutting industry on the Coast, and pointed out that the Railway Department had .recently laid down such a strict rule with regard to the cutting of silver pine sleepers, that it was quite impossible to supply sleepers if the new conditions were enforced. He also pointed out that the silver pine sleepers, similar to those now being cut and rejected by the Railway Department, had been accepted for the last ten years and that even now the Public Works Department were accepting these rejected sleepers. The Premier said the Government wanted 500,000 sleepers, and as a matter of policy the Cabinet had decided that the West Coast sleepers must be taken, and that Government did not intend, as had been rumoured, to import sleepers from Australia.

By announcement in our advertising columns it will be seen that Miss Lodge (late of Wellington) has resumed dressmaking in Arney street, where ladies may obtain all the latest styles, fit being guaranteed. Concerning womankind in general, and of Greymouth in particular, an erudite philosopher has discovered that “She can come to a conclusion without the trouble of reasoning upon it,” and no sane man can do that. Six of her can talk at once and get along first-rate, and no two sane men can do that. She can talk as sweet as cream to the woman she hates, while two men would he punching each others heads inside of ten words. She can drive a man crazy for twentyfour hours, and instantly transport him to Paradise by tickling him under the chim. There does not live a mortal son of Adam’s misery, who can do that. She can make a Garrick Club Social the most enjoyable functions on the face of this green old earth, and what’s more she does it every time. No wonder Matt Guthrie admits the women folk for one shilling while he charges the worthless members of the sterner sex two. She can but what is the use of talk ? Go to the Opera House next Wednesday evening and you will find that the ladies of the Garrick Club can do everything, and do it well.

An innovation copied by our Postal Department from America is that of a miniature receiving and delivery box for the convenience of suburan and country people. The familiar candle-box which is frequently seen nailed to the gate leading to the homestead and the country residence may now bo superseded by an ornamental iron box of patent contraction, with keys for the householder and the postman, thus ensuring safety for correspondence and facilitating the work of delivery'. As the department is only charging about 13s for the new box it should meet with a ready response to its enterprise. Sample boxes arc to be seen at the different post-offices, a first shipment of about 200 of the boxes having been received from America.
