THE ROYAL VISIT.

(by electric telegraph—copyright)

[Pee Press Association.]

Melbourne, May 2. Hon J. G. Ward was a guest of the Stock Exchange to-day. Tho Chairman in proposing his health referred in kindly terms to New Zealand. Mr Ward in his reply said that it in tho future Australia found herself with surplus funds for investment Now Zealand might lock upon the Commonwealth as a happy hunting ground for money instead of going further afield. Tho Now Zealand contingent arrived to-night by special train and marched to the camp. With regard to Mr Seddon’s invitation to State Ministers to visit New Zealand, the Cabinet has decided that no departmental Ministers could be spared, but that two honorary members (Messrs Crook and M'Gregor) would go. The streets are densely crowded and the principal railways are disorganised with the constant stream of sightseers from the country and neighboring states. An army of workmen is engaged night and day in order to have everything ready by Monday. Many New Zealand visitors have ar rived.

Given fine weather, the pageant will be exceedingly fine. A. feature of the decorations is the number of arches. Those structures are on the whole more imposing than the Sydney ones although not as graceful and artistic. Only a limited number of persons will bo permitted to witness the actual landing, but the public will have the fullest opporI tunity of seeing their Royalties after they enter the city gateway on Princess bridge. Mr Barton definitely states that the Federal tariff will bo dealt with this session.
