THE RIVERS COMMISSION.

(Before H. A. Gordon (Chairman), Flatman M.H.R., and Murray.) A sitting in the above Commission w < held in the County Council Chambers th; ) forenoon to receive evidence regarding damage by the Grey River, and proposals for making a sludge channel. The following persons appeared to claim:—

J. Doyle.—Claim for damage to sections at Red Jacks, the, value of which was £484. The applicant stated he had neither prospected the ground nor sold any of it for dredging purposes. Mrs Frankpitt.—Claim for compensation for damage to sections at Coal Creek. The applicant said that none of her land as yet, had been washed away, but that every flood left a silt; her property would be about 300 yards from the river. J. Stewart. —Claim for damage to his sections at Coal Creek, the valuation of which was £332. The applicant said that the land had been subject to floods since 1886. Applicant also stated that ho had done no prospecting, his sons had sunk Wo shafts but were unable to get down for water. Nothing had been done in the way of protecting the land from floods. P. Horn.—Claim for damages to sections at Coal Creek. The applicant stated that the river was cutting his land away and that it had been subject to floods for seven years. He had never prospected the ground and was not interested in dredging. Trustees Greymouth Racecourse —Mr Guinness appeared for Trustees, and Messrs Sheedy and Walton gave evidence as to value, and land swept away. Mr Sheedy yesterday took the Commissioners over the ground.
