'FRISCO MAIL SERVICE.
The new mail service between Now Zealand and San Francisco is now working as well as could be desired, and it is evident that unless better time is not kept a change will soon be demanded. A telegram received by us last night, dealing with the question, in connection with the five days' late arrival in London of the 'Frisco mail, which left Auckland on the 24th by the Ventura 18 hours late, a former resident of Now Zealand but now at San Francisco, telegraphs that the late arrival of the steamer was caused by two days' detention at New York. The remaining three days is accounted for by the slow passage on the Atlantic. The postal authorities state that every effort is being made here and in America to ensure the speedy
transport of mails, but unfortunate occurrences, such as the breaking down of steamers, are liable tn cause loss in connection with New York and the consequent despatch of mails thence by slower steamers than usual. Of course, any excuse is better than none, but all the same it is significant that when the Union Company had the contract, such long delays over time did not occur, and if it did not occur then it requires more explanation than the above to satisfy New Zealand.
