Large Steamer on Fire
Sydney, April 30. The Bielefield, a German-Australia liner, arrived from Hamburg. When near Crozets during a heavy gale, the vessel was found to be on fire. After twenty-four hours pumping it was got under, though it burned with great fury for sometime. Lady Ranfurly. Melbourne, April 30. Lady Ranfurly and daughters staying at Hopetoun's are leaving ior New Zealand to-morrow accompanied by Captain Alexander. Opening Commonwealth Parliament. The seating exhibition is so arranged that eight thousand can witness the opening of Parliament. It is estimated that over £50,000 of public and private money has been spent in the erection of arches, which are on a more ambitious scale than at Sj'dney. General Collen representing India, has arrived. The New Guinea Massacres. Brisbane, April 30. Tli9 tribe responsible for the missionaries murdered in New Guinea, numbers 800 warriors. A largo search party protected by the military will place the murder heyond doubt. The Premier states that tha question of a punitive party —if necessity for punishment arises—is a matter for the Admiral. The Pacific Cahle. 4 Brisbane, April 30. The visit of Peake, the Pacific Cable Engineer, is to select suitable landing places in Queensland and New Zealand. The first expedition to lay the cable in the Sou h Pacific leaves London in Jancary next, the second expedition will leave about August in a steamer which is being specially built to lay the Vancouver end. The whole work is to be completed by December 1902.
