Greymouth Evening Star, AND BRUNNERTON ADVOCATE. FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 1901. PUBLIC HEALTH REGULATIONS

A correspondent in another column in this issue declares that the hotel accommodation in Greymouth is not as good as it might be. Whether this is so or not will speedily be ascertainable, for under the Public Health Act regulations gazetted last week, it is provided that a house-to-house inspection shall immediately take place. With respect to inns and lodging-houses the regulations are very stringent. In every bedroom there shall be at least 750 cubic feet of air space for every person occupying the room, two children under ten years of age being counted as one adult, and if the maximum number of persons a room can accommodate is exceeded the keeper of the house will be liable to a penalty not exceeding £5. In common lodging-houses there shall be at least ten gallons of water per head per day for the lodgers. Every bedroom or dormitory which is occupied by two or more persons " shall be ventilated by means of a chimney, and also, if possible, by a window opening directly to the outside air." The beds "shall be stripped daily, and the bed clothes exposed for fully an hour, and the beds shall not be re-occupied within eight hours of being vacated." All slops and refuse must be removed by ten o'clock in the morning. Infringements of these regulations render the lodging-house keeper liable to a penalty not exceeding £5. It will be seen that the bedroom space requires to be slightly over 8 feet by 10 feet with 9 feet walls, or greater floor space with lower roof. We direct the attention of the public to this matter, as it is the intention of the authorities to rigidly enforce the regulations.
