The weather was fine, but a cold Norwcster was blowing the hitler part of the day. About 3000 were present, and 18512 was put through the tote as against .USUrs for the first day last year. The results are as follows : WAIWETU HANDICAP. Osliak 1 Watcrford 2 Cameo -•• ••• ■•■ •' Battleaxo, The llempic and West Guard also ran. Watcrford led for four furlong-, when West Guard took charge, and led into the straight, which resulted in a splendid race down the straight, Ostiak on rails winning by a little over a length. Time 1 32. Div £2 10s. MAIDEN HACK. Shrapnell shell 1 Durable 2 Faker :! Waif, White Heather, Waitoa, Benefactor and Steel Gun also ran. A splendid race down the straight. Won by a head. Time, 110 1-5. Div, £5 6s. THOMPSON HANDICAP. Boreas 1 Rosella 2 Glenaladale 8 All started. Okoari led for half the journey, but on nearing the straight Boreas came through from the last position and led after entering, and stalling off a decided rush by Rosella won under whip by half a length. Time, 1 42 3-5. Div., £4 6s. HUKDI.ES. Bight Metal ... 1 Vanquish 2 Sudor •■■ ■•• ••• •' The Guard was scratched. Long Tom, Vanquish and Right Metal were in the van most of the way. The former dropped out of the contest; when half a mile away from homo. Right Metal was never again headed. "Won by two lengths.
