MAJOR MADOCK'S REWARD ?

New Zealand Honors.

(pee tress association.)

Wellington, April 25

There is general surprise at the absence of the name of Major Madoeks from the list of honours. In military circles the explanation is thought to be that the hero of New Zealand Hill will be rewarded as an officer of the Imperial Army. Captain Hughes siid to-day that the gratification which he fed; at receiving the D. 3.0. Companionship was diminished by the absence of any mention of Major Madoeks in the cablegram in the morning paper, and that he would ;iot be content until his comrade's bravery had been recognised. Dunedtn, April 25. The " Star," in editorially referring to the honors for New Zealanders, remarks : —"General surprise will, no doubt, be manifested that the name of Major Madoeks, the hero of New Zealand Hill, does not appear in the list. The probable explanation, however, is that Major Madoeks. being an imperial officer, Will be included in another list. Wo cannot. possibly believe that ho would ire passed over. There may bn some hitch in regard to his army rank, which is only that of lieutenant, and the Order of the Bath is never, we behove, conferred on any officer below field rank. As they have not given him the Distinguished Service Order, a higher distinction may be only delayed, and wo hope this rasy prove to the case."
