The English mail of Oth April left ’Frisco by the Ventura on the 18th of April, one day late. Out of a total of 148,236 children attending the State schools in Victoria, 110,738, or 78 per cent., attend Sabbath schools. This information has been obtained by the Education Department as the resuit of a challenge thrown out in the debate on the Scripture in Stale Schools Referendum Bill.
Edmund Quinn, who obtainsd an oldage pension under false pretences ad Ballarat, has been sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment. Evidence showed that the wife of accused bad £146 in the bank, and there was a joint account in favour of Mr and Mrs Quinn for between £6O and £7O.
The shipping returns of Victoria for the last year show a large increase in inwards in shipping compared with the previous year, the figures being 2,929,385 tons for 1900 and 2,835,186 for 1899. The total number of vessels that entered was 2101, as against 2024, the increased number of men employed in them being 5400.
