Ministerial. Wellington, This Day. During the Hon. Mr Ward’s absence, the ministerial work of the railway and Colonial Secretary’s Department is being discharged by Hon. Mr Mills, and of the Post and Telegraph Department by Hon. Mr Walker. The Seventh Contingent. Wellington, This Day. The Gluf of Taranto, with the Seventh Contingent aboard, arrived at Albany this morning. “ All well.” Census Returns. The census returns for the county of Hull, including the borough show that there was an increase of 10,050 since 1890. The population of Wellington City increased from 37,441 to 43,886, and the suburban boroughs all increased but one. Melrose increased from 2,041 to 2,995. Karori shows an increase from 1,024 to 1,212 ; Onslow from 1,249 to 1,499 ; Hutt 1,520 to 1,824. Excusive of the borough and county population of 7,107, there is an increase—including 510 members of the Seventh Contingent—of 1,417. Napier, This Day. The census returns for Hastings totals 3,050 an increase or 452 as compared with 1896. Auckland, This Day. The Dcvonport borough census totals 3,814 —an increase of 804. House Burnt Down. A hoarding-house in Queen street, occupied by Mrs. Barrington, was destroyed by (ire. The occupants had a narrow escape.
