OUR KUMARA LETTER.

(OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT-)

TCumaba, This Day. The flood in the Tcremakau river on Wednesday was the biggest for many years past. Although so large there is no damage to report as a consequence. Indeed the reverse is the case, for were it not for these recurring floods sweeping the tailings from (lie vicinity of the sludge channels, sluicing operations would long since have become very much hampered. As it is every flood gives the industry, in so far as it depends on the Tcremakau Hirer, as a tailing site, a new lease of life. It is but a new exemplification of the' old truth, “It is a had wind that blows nobody any good.” The Greenstone Creek was not so high in proportion as the river, and it fell rapidly and early. None of the dredges sustained any damage, excepting for being hampered somewhat with silt that had accumulated in the paddocks. Dredging operations were, nevertheless, suspended until yesterday afternoon, when a fresh start was made.

About GO tons of machinery have arrived feu* the Tcremakau Company’s dredge, and is being carted to the building site. The engines and portions of the winches, together with a quantity of small stuff, arc already on the ground. The directors of the Greenstone Junction Company have decided to call an extraordinary general meeting of shareholders to obtain the necessary authority to raise sufficient funds to meet the final payments shortly falling due to the contractors for the machinery. This course has become necessary in case a claim for immediate payment should be insisted on. The mode of raising the amount due is left optional with the shareholders. The Christchurch coaclt with the overland mails only reached town at 9 p.m. yesterday, having been delayed by floods and slips on the road.

I understand that Ike Eev. Mr. Thompson lias decided to retain the incumbency of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church for the present, as there was some difficulty in procuring a successor. Though Mr. Thompson may experience some disappointment in not being able to return at once (o finish ids university course, his congregation have reason to rejoice, as he lias shown himself enthusiastic and energetic in all things appertaining to his charge since he lias been located amongst us.

The latest news as to Mrs. Pugg’s condition is to the ell'ect that there is yet a gleam of hope that she may recover.
