THE HOKITIKA RACES.

The Hokitika races, according to the West Coast Times, were attended by 1200 people, the only drawback being the small fields. The Grand Stand was largely patronised and looked gay and animated with a full muster of fashionably attired womankind. In four races there were but two starters, in two three, and in the trotting seTcn. The events were well contested. Mrs, Batchelor won three events out of four. An unfortunate accident befell Brewster, Sanfoin’s jockey. After the start of the race and following closely on Garmoran, a stone kicked by the latter struck Brewster full in the right eye. Although suffering much pain and only one eye available, the lad stuck pluckily to the race and came in a close second. The blow was «o severe that there are fears that he will lose his eyesight.
