NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA.

BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH. —COPYRIGHT.]

[Per Press Association.]

Sydney, This Day, The Daily Telegraph in an article on New Zealand and the Commonwealth, says that if it is true, as some Federal Commissioners complained, that very little interest is taken here in their Australian proceeding, the reason probably is that doubt is felt as to whether New Zealand, or its Government at any rate, is in earnest. They question that by joining the Federation New Zealand would have an available open market jn six states instead of one. The commercial gain from Federation in fact, is on the side of New Zealand, more so as the manufactures arc so well advanced that the colony need not fear Australian competition. As to the terms of admission, the exception made in favour of Wostralia in respect of the tariff might be extended to New Zealand. The control suggested by Peacock seemed to go a lit tie too far. There is time enough to go systematically into those matters when New Zealand’s mind is made up. All wo know at present is that the colony has remained aloof all along. The Ministry opposed Federation for the reason that tho colony would lose its status, which if held by the people generally makes enquiry or argument a waste of time.
