CRIMINAL ASSAULT.

At the Police Court to-day a man named Walter .William Alfred Bates was committed for trial at the District Court on a charge of indecently assaulting a girl under 5 years. The little girl, a mere babj' in appearance she will not be five years old until the Bth of August next, but appeared very intelligent for her age, detailed the circumstances leading to the arrest and prosecution of the accused. It transpired that the child, after leaving school, was decoyed by the offer of sweetmeats to go with accused into Queen's Park, where the alleged offence was committed. The child's screams attracted two other children, who on noticing what was going on, gave the alarm to one of the two men who were sitting some distance away in the Park. One man, F. G. White, a laborer, immediately ran to the place indicated and chased and pluckily caught the accuped, pinioned him and held him until Sergt Dwyer arrived and placed him under arrest. Accused reserved his defence.
