In the House of Commons Mr Brodrick stated that 28,560 mounted troops had boon despatched to • South Africa since February, while 6003 aro awaiting transports.
Hon Mr Bilfour declined to propose that Moesrs Merrimm and Sauer be heard at the b*r of tho House of Commons.
Mr Bryce objected to tho punishment of tho rebels, and advised a general amnesty, and a gift of two million pounds to re-stook the farms. Mr Chamberlain said that tho rebels must be punished injustice to the loyalists. It would ba folly, not magnanimity, to assist the Boers with a gift instead of a loan.
Colonel Scobell on the 20th, at Blaauw, krants, drove Scheeper's force into an ambuscade preparod by Major Mullins who, firing at Ehort range, killed 1C and captured 26. The Mayor of Capetown presented a thousand returning Australians and New Zealanders with souvenirs and praised their fine exploits at Bothavilte, where early in November last they took a prominent part by inflicting a severe defeat on Do Wet and capturing several guns. The Mayor hoped that many Colonials would return to South Africa. They are taking a gun they captured at Vet River to Australia. Bruce Hamilton in a running fight expelled snipers from ridgo after ridge in Dewetedorp district. The Portugese have interned 398 Boers at Ponichc, and 275 at Alcobaca. Received this day, at 9 10 a m. London, March'29. The Australians largely compose the detective force at Johannesburg against illicit liquor and other offences. A thousand cases in the Police Court aud •100 in the higher Court have already been tried. Professor Goldwin Smith condemns Botha's refusal which was the best terms possible.
