GREYMOUTH FIRE BRIGADE.

At the Council meeting last night, the Fire Brigade report was presented by Mi*. Ashton as follows :

''Your Committee have the honor to report as follows : "1. That since last meeting a fire occurred in Leonard street in a cottage ownod and occupied by Mr. Peter Stephenson and which was totally destroyed, although the adjoining property was saved, The cost- of pumping was £J. 10s, which is very small. "2. That we are pleased to note the success achieved by the representatives of the Grcymouth Brigade at the demonstration held in Christchurch recently; they having won the principal event, defeating over 40 teams, besides being prominent in several minor events.

"3. That long-service medals be granted to firemen Blanchfield, D. Shannahan, H. Brown, F. Garth, J. Fitzsimmous, J. Gamble, T. Deero, W. McLeod, J. Greaney, J, Grogan and A. G. Ashton, in conformity with a previous resolution of the Council. The cost of same is £14175.

"4. That accounts amounting to £24 Is 3d have been passed for payment, and in order to meet these and the cost of the long-scrviee medals, your committee recommend that the sum of £4O be placed to the credit of the Fire Brigade account." Mr. Ashton, in moving the adoption, said the cost was less than last year. Mr. Petrie seconded, and said that not only was it about the cheapest year, but the efficiency of the brigade was good, while the fact that, in competing with the best brigades in the colony, they had taken the best trophy was evidence of the smartness of the men.

The Mayor said the cown had good reason to be satisfied with its Fire Brigade. The report was then adopted,
