The inquest was resumed this morning.

McLean stated that Mrs Smith said her husband borrowed £2OO on their property The deeds were given as security, but there was no mortgage or any other legal writing. She paid the money and Canway handed the deeds back. She paid the money in the presence of Williams of Maori Hill. Williams formerly practised as barrister and solicitor. Ho did not do so now. She paid £2OB including interest. She denied ever borrowing the money from Conway herself or giving him a promissory note or other acknowledge-

mant. She had heard that Conway was iil aboard the steamer. The Chief Engineer called at all the ladies cabins asking if Mrs Conway was aboard. Mrs Smith told the engineer she did not know any Mrs Conway. She did not go to see Conway when she hoard he was ill because she was attending a younglady in her cabin who had convulsions. Sae did not know what caused convulsions, but wc thought there might be poison aboard, but might have been caused by seasickness. Shortly afterwards the stewardess told Mrs Smith, Conway was dead. She admitted meeting Conway at Christchurch, and at Sumner Conway pressed her to drink first from the bottle and then she lost her memory. She paid Conway money the month before she left home. The detective detailed the arrest.
