THE STYCHE CASE.
(per press association.)
Wellington, This Day.
The motion for a now trial in the case of Slycho convicted at Christchurch of attempting to procure the murder of his wife, is being heard by the full Court of Appeal. The ground of appeal is that the verdict of the jury was against the weight of evidence. Joynt for accused contended that there was a broad distinction between an appeal in civil and criminal cases, as in the latter there was presumption of an innocence which had to be displaced and the evidence must be beyond doubt. In this case the most that could be said of the evidence was that it was suspicious but not strongly suspicious. No part pointed conclusively to the guilt committed or the absurdity of taking seriously the suggestion to a medical man to commit a murder for £2OO payable at three months by some unknown person. No motive was shown, and accused was in very prosperous circumstances, on good terms with his wife. Counsel is now criticising the evidence in detail.
