Greymouth Evening Star, AND BRUNNERTON ADVOCATE. THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 1901. MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

The coming municipal elections are likely to attract a good deal of attention. So far as can bo guaged at present—for the number has not yet been gazetted—there will be nine councillors. For these nine seats wo understand the present members will stand, while Messrs, Morris, Kettle, Forsyth, Ring, Dixon, Hart, Smith, Parfitt, Dr. Morice and others are all mentioned as candidates. For the Mayoralty, Mr. ivlathioson, the present occupant, will seek re-election, and will have as an opponent Dr. M'Brearty who has publicly declared himself. All this municipal vitality is exceedingly pleasing, indicating as it does an interest in the advancement of the town, which at present has many important works in hand. The now century has brought with it, so far as this district is concerned, increased trade and commercial activity. The town of Greymouth has already felt the impetus. Buildings are being erected in all directions, the town is being advanced and improved, and the local governing body must see that it does not lag behind. The Council has the waterworks and drainage in hand; it has the control of the gas works, which, if properly handled, will continue, as it is now, a source from which much revenue will be derived. In addition to the above, the incoming Council will bo required to construct abattoirs, a town hall, to make and improve our streets with greater [ rapidity than in the past, and attend to many sanitary matters. Such being the case, it is little wonder that every seat in the Council is to be contested next month. As we remarked, the vitality shown is a healthy sign.

[Since the above was written a telegram, appearing in another column of this issue, has been received showing that the Greymouth Council wiil be composed of the Mayor and nine councillors.]
