EXCOMMUNICATION OF TOLSTOI.
Great Riots in Consequence

St. Petersburg, March 19,
A great riot occurred at Newsky owing to the military preventing the celebration of Anniver’s death, the heroine who was tho victim of political tyranny. Revolutionary proclamation headed “Down with Czar” “Down with rotten officials.” were seen. All the military police at Petersburg were required to restore tho order. Countess Tolstoi protested at the synod against tho excommunication of her husband. Wo.kmen joined Tolstoi and the Students at St Petersburg who were rioting insido tho Kazan Cathedral were ejected after fierce fighting, the Cossacks using whips brutally.
Several women and children were crushed.
Seven hundred students have been arrested.
A hundred students protested to tho holy synod against Tolstoi’s excommunication. They petitioned tho Metropolitan to excommunicate them also.
They assembled at tho Ca'hedra shouting, smoking, up-etting images and whistling, while communion was preparing.
