The fortnightly meeting of the Young Men’s Club was held last night at the School of Mines. The improvement in the attendance was marked, several new members putting in an appearance. A subsidy of £5 odd was received from Government as the Society’s share of the subsidy to libraries. It was resolved to devote the amount with money in hand towards the purchase of new boobs. After some routine business was disposed of a debate on the question “Has labour saving machinery benefited mankind?” was taken. Mr E. Richards supported the affirmative, and Mr M. Egelton the negative. After a capital debate during which the pros and cons of the question wore fully discussed. A vote was taken resulting in a strong majority in the affirmative.
The heavy rain of the early part of yesterday should be ample to replenish the water supply of the district. The rain was especially welcome to miners in Cape Terraco and Westbrook, where the dams had run dry some time back.
The Greenstone Junction dredge is. working away steadily excavating a dam to insure safety should a ilood break away the breastwork.
The Greenstone Creek dredge broke the piston rod of (he winch engine and is laid up to effect repairs. These will bo effected in a day or so. There will be no returns from either of the above dredgt this week as they will not have optfjf out properly. I regret to have to report that Mrs Kugg is not improving in health as quickly as could he wished. Bhe is at present stopping with her daughter, Mrs Allison at Brunncrton, and I learn lias been confined to bed during the week. I learn that Mr Williams of Staffordtov. n has been appointed assistant master in the Hokitika District High School in place of Mr Sinclair, who assumes the hcadinastcrship of the locol school at the beginning of the month,
