FIJI GOVERNOR'S CHARGES.

Chamberlain expresses Regret. (pee tress association.)

Wellington, March 11

The Premier has received from Chamberlain, with permission to publish it, a letter which the Secretary of State for the Colonies sent to Governor O'Brien, of Fiji, with reference to the recent questions m dispute as to his speech on native land legislation in New Zealand.

Chamberlain adds that while summaries of O'Brien's speech have been garbled and distorted, he declares he cannot gather from a perusal of O'Brien's speech that the latter is fully informed as to the elaborate and carefully considered measures, which have been passed by the New Zealand Legislature for the protection of Maoris against alienation of their land by placing them under the control of an independent and impartial Court.

Chamberlain, concluding, says the result of these measures is that New Zealand whites and Maoris are living most harmoniously, and he reiterates regret that a portion of the Governor's speech was open to misconstruction.
