GREY EDUCATION BOARD.

A meeting of the above Board was held last night. Present—Messrs. Harris (chairman/, Pctrie, White, Flynn, Kerr, M'Carthy, Kettle, Marshall and Byrne. The hon. treasurer, Mr. Kettle, reported receipts since last meeting to he £l7O and expenditure £471188, having an excess for the month of £'22 18s. Ihe treasurer said the statement showed that their monthly salaries exceeded their income. The Chairman said this was partially accounted for by the number ot teachers away on sick leave. - From the Education Department, stating that swimming vote was £3 18s 3d for the year. From same, stating that the Government cannot give a special vote for the erection of a new school at Cohdcn. Mr. Kettle thought the Department was not treating the Board fairly. The school at Cobden had not been built by (government, and it was to all intents and purposes a new school .hey were erecting Mr. Maraha'l thought the Government should be applied for at least a subsidy of £ for £, and moved accordinglySeconded by Mr. M'Carthy, and supported by Messrs. Kerr, Flynn, and White and carried. From Westbrook Committee, applying for £lO for clearing ground.—Held over for Chairman's report. Resolved, on motion of Mr. Flynn, that Miss King be temporarily employed teacher at Moonlight school. Resolved, on motion of Mr. Pctrie,that three months' leave of absence be granted to Miss M'Donald. A good deal ot discussion ensued as to whether the term should be from month to month, but ultimately the resolution was agreed to. Resolved that a month's leave of absence be granted to Miss Batchelor. From Maori Gully Committee, asking for appointment of probationer. The Committee recommend Miss Stevenson, and the teachor Miss Cunningham. Mr Kettle said they must be led by their regulations and there regulationsaid the Teacner and Inspector were the proper parties to recommend. As, however, they had not yet the Inspector a report, he moved that consideration stand over for Mr Fetch's report.

Mr Kerr suppported the resolution. It seemed a pity they could not agree Mr M'Carthy thought the Committee should have a say in the matter. Mr Pctrie said that the Inspector and Teacher were the persons appointed to make the selection. The Teacher said Miss Cunningham was the only one fit for the position and her recommendation must be accepted. He moved that pending the Inspector's report, the teacher s recommended be accepted. The Chairman was going to study the Committee as much as possible. Mr. Flynn sail tho Board slnuld accept the committee's rceommodatior. Mr Kettle's resolution was after along and irregular discussion ultimately carried.

From Nelson Creek Committee asking that Miss Barnhill be appointed an assistant teacher instead of a pupil teacher.

Mr Kettle moved that the Committee be informed that Miss Barnhill had not yet passed the live examinations, and that the secretary explain the circumstances to them. Mr M'Carthy seconded.

Mr Marshall was of opinion that the Nelson Creek people would sooner keep Miss Barnhill as a pupil teacher rather than lose her altogether. The Chairman's report upon the necessary lepairs to the school buildings was read. On the motion of Mr Kettle the report was adopted. The Government schedule of increases in salaries was then considered. Mr- Korr moved the adoption of the report. They mint cither accept, ho presumed, or reject tho whole. Mr. Kettle seconding pro forma. He did not think the alloc ition was a good one. Somo of our teacher.) wero given no increase. He preferred to see the schedule sent back and ask tho Minister to give tho Board the money to allocate. Mr. "White took a similar view to Mr. Kettle. Ho could not understand on what linei tho Minister had dealt with tho question. Ho had tried and could not find any rulo. It soemad to him that it was only tho higher teachers that had received any consideration,

Mr. Flynn held that all tho smaller schools wero left out in the cM. Ho could not accept tho schedule in its present form.

Mr. Korr favoured tho acceptance of the schedule and then endeavour to make alterations afterwards. Mr. Petrie had failed to find any rule or order in the allocation. Ko wou'd ■when this resolution was disposed of move another bearing on the matter.

A long discussion followed and ultimately the schedule was receivod, Mossrs Harris and Kettle voting against. Mr. Petrie moved that a committee of the Board bo formed to mako further suggestions relative to other salaries to the Minister of Education at a meoiing a fortnight hence and that a tabulated statement of teachers salaries, number of years service, number of children in school, and classification bo prepared by the Secretary. Seconded by Mr. Flynn and carried.

It was docided in future to meet on the second Monday in tho month instead of on the second Tuesday. The following applications for the teachers of tho Ahaura school wero received : —G. Eudkin, Kumara, (E 4); E. W. Hill, Midhurst, Taranaki (D); T. A. Nicholl, Melrose, Christehurch, (D) ; M. Malone, Nelson Creek, (E 5); L. De Berry, (D 4); D. Adderson, (no certificate) Murchison; P. J. Sutton, Christehurch, (D); Miss Campbell, Otago, (El); Misa Turubull, Ahaura, (El); Miss E. Crowley, Greenstone (03). Mr Petrie moved that the applications from the local toacbers be sent on to the 6 Ahaura Committeo for selection. Mr Kettle seconded. ILi thought th it the board was in duty bound to support their own teachers in preference to outsiders.

Mr Kerr said he would support sending all the certificated teachers on to the committee till such time as the Board decided to'acccpt none but local teachers. The chairman moved that all be sent on. Carried. Mr Petrie moved that the Ahaura committee he asked to favorably consider the local teachers. Mr Kettlo seconded and Mr Whito supported. Lost, Messrs Petrio, Kettlo, and White voting "Aye." Tho following applications for the Marsden School wero received .—H. F. Jamioson, Kumara (E. and partial D.); D. Anderson, no certificate"; F. G. Gibbio, Beefton, no certificate. It was decided to send on tho applications.

For Bed Jacks tho following applications wore received :—Mary Moriaity, Stillwater,, no certificate; Katharine Canterbury, no certificate; D. Anderson, Murchison, no certificate.— All wc-ro sent to tho committee.
