Wellington, This Day,

A petition was presented to the Premier this morning for the South Island mercantile men praying Government to assist in the development of trade with South Africa.

The Premier expressed sympathy and said that several tenders had been re ceivcd from firma willing to lay on steamer, Government was now in communication with Shaw Savill and the New Zealand Shipping and Tyser Lines asking them to quote rates for freight and further notice would defend their answers.
