RETURN OF SERGT. M’GREGOR AND TROOPER LAMBERT.

A very largo number of people (says the West Coast Times) assembled to welcome Farrier Sergt. M’Grcgor and Trooper Lambert who returned from South Africa, by last evening’s train. The First Westland Rifles and Volunteer Band under Capf. Macfarkanc were also present to receive the returned soldiers, who were formally received by tho Mayor, Mr Micho l , who addressing tho men said : Over a year ago they assembled at tho same place for tho purpose of farewelling them ns soldiers of our beloved Queen going to war. "Ho now welcomed them back ns soldiers of tho King. Since they loft, tho Queen whom they swore to servo had passed away and

another sovereign reigned in her stead. Many of their comrades had also given up their lives for the Empire. The returned troopers thenisolves had learned by bitter experience something of the horrors of wafc; Under the circumstances ho was stiro they wore thankful to be able to return to their relations and friends. Gn their behalf—and on behalf of the people of the town and district ho extended to them a most hearty welcome and hoped they would soon be restored to health. A largo procession was then formed and headed by the band and volunteers marched to the drill shed. A great many afterwards assembled at the Red Lion Hotel where a general hand-shakingtook place. Considering their hard experience both raon look far better than might be expected.
