A Charge of Murder. Waimate, March 1. On the Court resuming in M’Carthy’s case, the Magistrate ruled that Ellen McCarthy might be treated as a hostile witness. Her statement made early in January put in bore out the statement made by the Crown Prosecutor in opening the case. The police evidence indicated that the body was placed where found.
The Indian Troops. Invercargill, March 1,
The Indians arrived at 2 45. An immense concourse assembled, and the visitors were mounted and marched through the streets to Queen’s Park, where they are being regaled. The Newly Appointed Judge. Auckland, This Day. Members of the legal profession last evening welcomed the Chief Justice and bide farewell to Justice Cooper. The latter was presented with an address by the Auckland Law Institute tendering congratulations. Volcanic Disturbance. Auckland, March 1.
A wonderful sight at the thermal regions augmented by a remarkable outbreak in the vicinity otJLake Rotomahana, was witnessed by Humphrey Haines. About one acre of country suddenly burst forth with great noise, and an immence stream threw a great column of muddy stones to a height of about six hundred feet. The vast cloud of steam ascended two thousand feet. The mud thrown up was bespattered for a considci'ablc distance around.

The Hon Carroll favors the resmeitat tion of the New Zealand Native Association on the basis of the Australian Native Association that is to work on Non Political lines taking up matters that advances the interests of the colony.
