A Terrible Experience

On Friday last at Takaka, Golden Kay district, an old ago pensioner named Wm. Bayford aged 70 fell over a cliff into the water breaking his thigh. He dragged himself out of the water and remained from roon on Friday till nine on Monday night in wet clothes and without food. His rescuers brought him to the Nelson hospital. The fc'eventh Contingent

Canterbury has been allotted 84 men for the Seventh Contingent; out of RJO who applied CO have been ordered to report themselves at the local Defence Office at once. About thirty came into town yesterday and are now in camp at the drill shed grounds. r l hey will undergo a medical examination and afterwards will bo put through their facings by Scrgt-Major Coleman, who drilled tho previous contingenrs. Those who have gone into camp are rather a weedy lot, and several of them will not pass the medical test.
Tho Defence Department has called for tenders for a supply of 2100 boots for the Seventh Contingont. On tin samples being shown at the local office local manu-
facturers considered them so inferior that several of them sent to Wellington their own samples with tenders' and the tender of Messrs M. O'Brien and Coy was accepted for their own sample.

The Premier denies the statement in tho Melbourne Argus, that he suggested pooling the Cable revenue; tho matter was mentioned at the Melbourne Conference but not by him.
