Medical Practitioners’s Act. Dunedin, February 15,
At tho Police Court to-day William Stanton was charged with wilfully and falsely using name and title of -l doctor. ” implying that he was registered under the “ Medical Practitioners’ Act, ” 1889. The case was adjourned for production of further evidence.
Sly Greg Case
Dunedin, February 15,
Tho police to-night made a raid on the premises of Belson, a fishmonger. George Street, aud seized a large quantity of liquor. A charge of sly-grog selling will follow.
The Otarama Murder.
Dunedin, February 15.
In the Otarama stabbing caso Alexander Thompson was committed for trial for tho murder of the sailor Gibbs. When the charge against Carl Knuste, the other prisoner, was called, tho Crown Prosecutor said that after looking through tho depositions ho could find no ovidenco against the man and he did not intend talcing proceedings. The Magistrate said ho had pleasure in dismissing the case. Death of Sir Ed. Stafford. Wellington, Feb. 15.
The Government has received a cable announcing the death of Sir Edward Stafford, three times Premier of tho colony.

Two firemen from tho steamer Karamea were to-day sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for broaching two cases of brandy during tho voyage.
Trade with Cape Colony.

The following freights have been fixed far tho Otarama, tho first boat to leave the Colony for the Cape, under tho new arrangement by which this and tho Shaw Savill and Tyscr Companies amalgamate to send about every six weeks to South African ports :—Wheat 45s and oats 55s per 2240 lbs ; flour 455, bran and pollard 655, and oatmeal 50s per 2000 lbs ; case goods 50s per ton measurement; compressed hay 100 s per 2240 lbs ; mutton :’d per lb ; lambs, 13-lOd per lb, and beef 5-8 d per lb. Tho troopers who returned yesterday by the Karamea were to-day entertained at dinner. Hons. Hall-Jones, Walker and Mills were present.
Special Settlement
Christchurch, February 15,
The Government have purchased 32 acres on tho river Heathcote, near the Port Hills, about two miles from town, for closer settlement purposes.
