GREY DISTRICT COURT.

Friday, Feijruaey 15th.

[Before His Honor, Judge Ward.]

George and William Lawson and Edward Pring were charged, on committal from the Magistrate's Court, Kumara, with conspiring to defraud certain persons by salting a dredging claim known as Foley's.Extendcd.

Mr Hannan (Crown Prosecutor) appeared for the Crown, and Messrs Guinness and Murdoch for the defence. All the accused pleaded " not guilty." Mr Hannan, in opening the case, said the information was laid under section 238 of the Criminal Code Act, whereby accused if found guilty would be liable to 5 years' imprisonment. He said the Lawsons who pegged out the claims were not miners, being engaged in the timber trade. He sketched the case as recorded in the lower court (already fully reported in our columns), and the buying of gold at the Union Bank bj r one of the Lawsons, and giving a wrong name.

The first witness called was P. Tausey who, so far, has given no new evidence to that already reported by us.
