It is now reported,■ that the extensive naval demonstrations published yesterday, were unfounded, it is alleged that the squadrons be unable to maintain a sufficient rate of speed, nevertheless sufficient war vessels at each of the ports will give a suitable welcome.
Two Channel Cruisers accompany Ophir to Gibraltar, two through the Mediterranean from Gibraltar to Suez.
The St George a Juno escort the rest of ihe journey.
Melbourne, February 14
A cable tho Yorks intended to go direc* to Sydney, caused much surprise and disappointment. The Premier has instructed the Agent-General to see Chamberlain, and strongly urge that as tho Yorks are coming specially to Melbourne to discharge an important commission, it was only right that they should come direct and make thoir official landing there, otherwise plans would be upset, and people greatly disappointed.
