SWIMMING.
Rain or no rain the Greymouth Swimming Club will hold its first annual sports to-morrow afternoon at Cobdcn, and judging by the number of tickets already sold, a record attendance will be present. Messrs Fred and Arthur Truscott, Jack and Calvert, who figure conspicuously among the entrants, arrived overland from Christchurch yesterday, and the meeting between these doughty opponents and our local cracks will provide great excitement. The first two named come with fine records, Fred having this year swam second to Champion in tliQ| 220 yards New Zealand Championship* whilst last year he won the championship of Canterbury for this distance. Arthur two years back won the 100 yards’ championship of New Zealand in fast time, and has also been placed several limes in these classic events, besides winning the championship of Wellington in 1898. Messrs Jack and Calvert arc handicap men and may be relied on to give a good account of themselves in all events. Of the local men Messrs Walter and Fred Cocks are in fine form, having undergone a thorough course of training, and it is to these two that Greymouth looks to see the honors being kept at home. Hamilton, who has been suffering from influenza, will hardly be at his best, but the meeting between he and the Truscott Brothers will cause a hard fought struggle for supremacy, especially in the 220 Yards Intcrprovincial Championship. Good fields have entered for the two events set down for the schoolboys, and Christophers should have a good chance. A. Calvert, Lloyd Lord and J. M‘Connell should have a great show in the diving events which should be very interesting items on the programme, whilst J. M. Hamilton will give an exhibition dive off Cobden bridge during the afternoon. Our readers are finally reminded that the sports start punctually at 2 30, and the price of admission being 1/-, which will go towards improving the present site of the baths.
