GREY EDUCATION BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the above Board was held last night i^ent l Messrs Harm (chairman), M'Carthy, Kerr, Flynn, White ami 3?otric» The Hon. Treasurer (Mr Kettle) reported as follows General Account-Receipts for month £165 I2s Gd, and expenditure for month £490 11s, leaving a deficienej of £4O l Js 5d for the month. _ . Building Account -Receipts £no, expenditure £SO ss, leaving a balance of £724* 15s. Against this was_ Cobdeii School £475, leaving but £3ol los. The Chairman reported as follows : «I bave to report that, subject to the approval of the Board, I have appointed Mass Minnie Smith to act im relieving assistant teacher at Bl.ukba in place of her sister, who is tutlering faom loss of voice ; and I have also appointed Thomas Leileh as probationer in the same school. , “ I have further to report that, at the request of the Greymouth Committee and subject to the Boaul s approval, I hare appointed Miss Bradshaw temporary infant mistress at the Greymouth school in the place of Miss Batehelor.whois under medical treatment at We hngton. Beport adopted after a long discussion aa to letters not being before the Board, and agreed to let m itters remain as they are till next meeting. Letter from Education forwarding list of increases of teachers salaries under the Act of last session. Mr. Petrie complained that Hie detailed list had not been issued to members when it arrived. It had been al owed to he dead in the office for nearly a month. He did not blame the Secretary after what transpired at last meeting. He held strongly to the opinion that all documents coming to the Board were open to the inspection of all members. Ho moved that consideration be deferred till next meeting, and m the interval members be supplied with a copy of schedule and that in future all documents bo at the disposal of members for personal supervision. Mr. Kerr in seconding strongly supported the position taken up by Mr. Petrie. The document should have been issued to members at once, All documents coming to the Board were public and members had a perfect right to see them.
Mr Flynn and tho Chairman took a lika view of the resolution which was then put and carried. A letter was received from the head mistress ofjthe.Kokiri school, asking that Miss Cuhn?ngham he appointed as pupil teacher. A letter was also received from the chairman of the committee objecting to the appointment. Tho secretary of the committee was in attendance, and said the chairman s letter had not been before the committee. Mr Petrie pointed out that pupil teachers were by regulation appointed by the Board on tho recommendation ot the teacher and by approval of the Inspector and this was what appeared to have been done in this case. Mr White moved that Miss Cunningham be appointed. She evidently was the only one competent. Seconded by Mr Petrie.
Mr M'Carthy moved that the whole matter be reform! back to the Committee with an explanation (hat by regulations the Board appoints upon the recommendation of teacher and inspector. Seconded by Mr Flynn and carried.
In conformity with notice ot motion given by Mr, Potrie at last meeting Mr. White moved that owing to Miss Maggie Verguson and Master H. Kernahan nob receiving the full term ot instruction by the headmaster for tho schlarship oxamin-
ation, and considering the creditable position obtained by them, that they ba granted two years free tutioa at the High School. Seconded by Mr. Petrie and carried. From the chairman of the Ahaura school forwarding the resignation of Mr W. Bundle, as headmaster ; also enclosing the thanks of Mr Bundle to the members of the Board for the courtesy and kindness extended to him during his 14 years of service. Mr Kerr moved that his resignation be received with regret. Mr Bundle had at times been a most excellent teacher, and if ever he had occasion to revert back to his profession ho was sure every member of the Board would strive to give him employment. He one of the best teachers on the Board’s staff, and he . sympathised with the Ahaura committee and Board at losing his services.
Messrs White, Harris and Petrie spoke in a like manner, the latter suggesting that Mr Kerr add to his resolution, that a letter bearing the Board’s seal be given to Mr Bundle testifying to the esteem in which ho was held, and the excellent services he had rendered. Resolution with words added was then carried, Mr Petrie moved and Mr Flynn seconded that applications be called for head toaohor for the Ahaura school.— Carried-
A letter was received from Miss Malone, Bed Jacks, resigning her position af teacher.
Mr Flynn, chairman of the Bed Jacks’ committee, paid a high tribute to Miss Malone for the way she had attended to her duties during the three years she was in charge. The result of the last year’s examination proved the school to be in a most satisfactory position. „ Mr Petrie moved that the resignation he received with regret. It was always known that the Bed Jacks’ school was a “ model school for cleanliness and management” and that Miss Malone was a valuable teacher. Mr Byrne also spoke in terms of praise of Miss Malone, as a teacher, and whilst seconding the motion, he felt regret at the Board losing such a faithful teacher. The chairman moved that applications be called for teacher to fill the vacancy. Mr -Flynn seconded. Carried. A letter from Miss Noble, Marsden school, notifying the Board that she had received an appointment outside the colony (Samoa) and asking to be relieved after one month. , _ Mr Petrie moved and Mr Byrne seconded that the request be granted. Miss Crowley, teacher Poerua school, asking that she be transferred to another SC JIr Petrie moved that the teacher be informed that there were now three vacancies in the board and that she had better make application. Mr Flynn seconded- Carried. , Mr Kerr moved that the tender of Mr Gleoson for Cobden School be accepted. The promise had been made to build two years ago and a new school was imperative. „ , Mr Petrie was of the same opinion as the mover and seconded the motion. Messrs Harris and M'Carthy said they had paid a visit to the school and found it simply rotten and quite unfit for a school. They favored the work being put in hand. Carried. From the Dobson committee asking the board to relieve them of some of their liabilities. Held over till next m Mr Harris gave notice of motion that he would move at next meeting that the board meet on the first Monday in the month, instead of the second as at present,
