THE ANGLICAN SYNOD.
(per press association.)
Napier, Fob. 4.
At the general Synod to-day the business was almost purely formal. The report of tha committee on the amendment of the Canon for the trial of Bishops was received and the report of the Melanesian mission was referred to the missions committee. The rest of the afternoon session was occupied in sanctioning the lease, sale of exchange of church lands at Eltham, Wellington, Masterton, and Hamilton. The evening session was mainly taken up with a discussion on the bill moved by the Bishop of Waiapu in reference to the authority of Bishops being required for alterations in church fabrics and utensils. The motion was strongly opposed by some speakers on the grounds that in a democratic country like New Zealand, it was intended by the early founders of the church of New Zealand to place as little temporal power in the hands of Bishops as possible, such duty being left to the trustees of the dioceses. The Bill was thrown out on the second reading.
