The Fifth Contingent.

It has been decided that the Fifth Contingent will be armed by the Imperial authorities on arrival at Capetown. Federal Politics. Received this day, at 9 27 a in, Sydney, February 6.

Crick says the statement that Canada has withdrawn from the Pacific Cable is ridiculous. The contract has been signed by the Imperial Government, and the line will have to be constructed under any circumstances. He added that the statement appeared to have been made on the strength of a cable received a couple of days ago to the effect that if Canada had known the conditions of the contract were to be altered, would have considered whether they continued its obligations in the connection scheme.
