Obituary,
London, February 5. Edward J. Hopkins, the well-known organist, aged 83. [Hopkins, Edward J., Mus. Doc., born in Westminster, June 30, 1818, was admitted at the age of eight as a chorister in the Chapel Royal, St. James’s, where he remained till his voice broke in 1833, He then became a pupil of Thomas Forbes Walmislcy, organist of the Church of St. Martin-in-thc-Ficlds. About a twelvemonth afterwards, September 17, 1834, Mr Hopkins played for and obtained his first appointment, that of organist to Mitcham Church, Surrey, at the early ago of sixteen. This post he exchanged for that of organist to St. Peter’s, Islington, in 1838. The same year he obtained the Gresham gold medal for his anthem, “Out of the Deep;” and in the year 1840, he obtained a similar prize, for his anthem, “ God is gone up,” the umpires being Dr Crotch, Mr W. Horsley and Sir John Goss. In 1841 lie accepted the position of organist to St. Luke’s Church, Berwick Street, where he remained until 1813. Dr Hopkins has composed a number of anthems, services and voluntaries, and lias received many honorable distinctions in recognition of his scrvices to music.— Ed., E.S.]
Snowstorm at Liverpool.

During a severe snowstorm at Liverpool the overhead electric tramway wires fell, killing two and injuring twelve. Anarchists Active.
An anarchist named Calcagano, has left Now York for Europe. The Italian detectives have been placed on the alert.
The Austrian Language Difficulty.
Received this day at 9 3 a. m, Vienna, February 5.
Francis Joseph, announced in the Eoichsrath that prompt legislation will be introduced to settle the language difficulty which caused so much trouble with the Czech, German and other parties comprised of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Duke of York’s Health.
Received this day at 9 3 a. ra. London, February 5. The Duke of York so far has recovered :o bo able to leave his bed.
