AUSTRALASIAN GOLD YIELD.
The Australasian output of gold in 1900 was appreciably less than in the previous year, and the figures for the two years compare as under:— Colony, 1899. 1900. oz, oz. West Australia ... 1,643,877 1,510,950 Queensland ... 949,894 981,633 Victoria ... 861,905 821,007 Now South Wales 496,196 543,301 Tasmania and S.A. 107,115 110,500 New Zca’and 388,515 371,993
4,445,272 4.209,384 The actual decrease is 236,1880 z, and of the principal producers Queensland alone shows an increase. The decline in New South Wales is most marked. In a normal year the decrease in the Australian output would not bo worth noticing, but with the supplies from the Transvaal cut off for over twelve months it is a different matter. The demand for the metal for coinage and for the arts and sciences is as strong as ever, and the loss sustained last year through the closing down of the Rand mines and the decrease in the Australasian output must hare hecn felt seriously.
