A LIVELY MINERS’ MEETING.

Gonnsnonoron, Feb. 4-

A meeting of clailnholdcrs of the Waimea main trail race was held on Saturday evening in Hanrahan’s Hall for the purpose of electing trustees. Ihc annual meeting which should have been held (says the Times) in May last having lapsed, at the request of the claimholders, Warden Macfarlane appointed Saturday for the election.

Resolved that each claim have the right to appoint one trustee. The following nominations were then received : Messrs J. Tokcr, P. Sullivan, J. M’Whirtcr, R. Quinn, P. Romas, D. Thomson G. J’cbay, P, Rowland, W 7. Linchani, J. Fitzgibbon, D. Neville, and B. Cox. The number of trustees to be elected was nine while the nominations received were 13.

Mr J. M’Whirtcr hero stated that some of the persons nominated were not claimholders and if allowed to vote the election would be illegal. Mr Cox then wanted to know who gave Messrs Quinn and Shannon the right ro drive a race to connect with the main tail race while at the same time the Linchan Party was refused. During this debate some strong language was used and coats were taken off, hut Constable Dew, with the aid of a few specials, quelled the disturbance without any damage being done on either side. The Secretary, Mr P. Sullivan, left in disgust and his place was taken by Mr J. Fitzgibbon and another attempt at election having failed both the chairman, Mr D. Thomas, and Mr Fitzgibbon also left.

Mr B. Cox was voted to the chair but as a large number of claimholders had left the room the mocti ng was finally adjourned to Feb 23rd. The chief dispute at the meeting seemed to be who were claimholders and w T ho were not, some contending that whoever had registered claims and were to be worked by the channel were claimholders. Others contended that only those who had contributed either in cash or labour were entitled to vote. The Warden is now to be asked to decide who arc claimholders and who arc not, his ruling to be final.
