Supreme Court.

Wellington, February 4. At the Supreme Court John M'Carthy charged with theft was placed upon probation for four months. A Maori named Mntu Nanachona, for forgery was admitted to six monthf£2aijbation. Walter Phillips was cnce on a charge of defrauding the Imperial Insurance Company. The three foregoing prisoners had pleaded guilty in the Tower Court. Charles Arncy and Charles Vincent 'Cherry wore found guilty of indecent assault and were remanded for sentence. Roman Catholic Clergy. Archbishop /Redwood and a party of visiting clergy loft to-day for Westport. They intend journeying overland to Christchurch. Midland Railway. The Midland Railway Commission held another meeting to-day. After a short discussion it was decided to adjourn until Wednesday when they will announce what points they desire to take evidence upon. Arrival of Imperial Troops. Invercargill, This Day. Though it was reported that the Britannic with the Imperial troops was signalled yesterday, it proved incorrect. The steamer, however, arrived in the roadstead at the Bluff at daylight this morning. Election Expenses Carthrton, This Day. W. O. Buchanan, an unsuccessful candidate at last election, was prosecuted by the returning officer for not making a return of hia election expenses and was fined £lO and costs.

A New Harbor at Kaikoura. ■ * Wellington, This Day. Captain Falconer and a detachment of the Torpedo Corps, who have been engaged removing sunken rocks at Kaikoura harbor, returned to Wellington, having completed the ta«k, which gives Kaikoura a new little harbor with 12 feet of water at tho wharf, and 20 feet eastward of Ihc moorings and well out to the reef.

Illness of the Chief Justice. Wellington, This Day.

The Supreme Court was unable to sit to-day owing to the indisposition of the Chief Justice.

Railway Stock. 63 carriages made at St Louis U. S. A. for the Government railway have been shipped. An expert is coming with them to examine their erection.

Westinghouse brakes have been fitted on sufficient carriages for use on the Napier-Wellington section, and engines will bo equipped on the arrival of the new shipment, which is daily expected.
