VICTORIA VICTRIX.
[The following tribute to our late Queen under letters “ E. H. S.” appeared in the New York Times on July 4th, 1897, (Diamond Jubilc.)] “ Throned above all the highest thrones of earth, More hundred million freemen counting thee Their Sovereign Queen, than ever bent
the knee To mortal King or Queen since time had
birth; Of dazzling, gleaming gems there seems no dearth Upon thy blazing diadem, yetmust there be One void there, for young England o’er the sea Thy grandsire lost—our land of boundless worth; And though this jewel, lost so long ago, Not battling bayonet, nor thundering
gun Could win back thy sceptre; yet know, O Queen! thy three-scored sceptred years just done, Filled full of good, have set our love aglow, And wear thou this instead, thyself hast won!”
