NOTES AND COMMENTS.
It may be noted as a rather singular coincidence that the Duke of Kent, the father of the late Queen, died on the 23rd January, 1820, and that the Duke of Teck, father of the new Princess of Wales, died exactly a year before the illustrious manareh, who has just passed away, on the 22nd of January, 1900. The Duke of Clarence, the eldest son of the new King, also died in January, on the Mth, 1892.
Hebe is an instance of the Imperial War Office methods. When Sir Evelyn Wood was a captain of the 17th Lancers he devised an improved cavalry saddle, and sent it to the War Office. The letter and parcel were politely acknowledged at the time, and the matter rested, for nearly 20 years. Then, when Sir Evelyn, was Quartermaster-General of the Forces, he came by chance across a parcel addressed in his own handwriting to the War Olllce. It was unopened, and on cutting the string he found his saddle !
Dk Wir.r.iAM Lax win!, a bacteriologist of Hamburg, has discovered a new process for preserving meat. This process has been put to the lest in provisioning the ships that transported German troops to China. The meat, after having been most carefully examined, is surrounded by a layer of fat, and is then enclosed in a gelatine-like congealing mass. According to a German trade journal, it is immaterial whether the meat be raw, cooked, or salted down; it will keep fresh and eatable for years. The inventor has sent moat to the hottest parts of the world, and tests of all kinds are being continually made in that direction.
