(I'flß PItESS ASSOCIATION ) The Returned Soldiers. CinusTCinniCH, This Day. The Christchurch men who returned to New Zealand from South Africa by the Orient arrived last night. In spite of the heavy rain a large crowd assembled at the railway station, and the men were cheered heartily. So formal ceremony took place. Swimming Championship. Smart, Secretary of the New Zealand Swimming Association, received a cable message from Melbourne this morning asking if M. Champion had left New Zealand for Melbourne, as the Amateur Swimming Championship would likely be postponed on account of the Queen's death. Champion is, however, now on his way to Melbourne. Dredge Returns. Dunedin, This Day. Dredging returns —Inch Valley loozs 6dwts. Gold Queen Bozs odwts. Suicide. An inquest was held to-day on Hector M'Caughan, found hanging on Monday last in a byre on his farm at Green Island. Deceased had been behaving peculiarly for a little time before. He got up early and went out, His wife being anxious, followed shortly and found deceased hanging. While his nophew held him up she ran for a knife and cut him down. Efforts were made to revive him, but ho never regained consciousness and died on Thursday. Medical evidence showed that death was duo to apoplexy, and a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane was returned. The Premier's Return. The Premier is expected to reach the Bluff at the end of next week. Railway Pay. All the Railway workshop men through' out the Colony are to receive pay during the three days the shops are closed. All other Bailway men at work will receive three days holiday when they can be spared. The Colchester Murder. Skerrett and Wyllie, Solicitors for Lillywhite who is in custody on suspicion of being Blatch, the man charged with the Colchester murder has received a letter from Chief of Polios at Tacona Washington (U.S.), enclosing statements from reputable citizens identifying the portrait of prisoner sent to him as that of Lillywhite who they assert was a resident at Tacona from 1883 to some time 1891, when he left for New Zealand. i
