AN EXTRAORDINARY ORATOR.

Private advices received state that an extraordinary and scandalous scene took place in connection with the proceedings aboard the Moana during the recent Commonwealth celebrations. It appears (says a Wonganui Chronicle) that a prominent representative of rhe Native race whilst labouring under intense excitement, insisted on making a speech in the main cabin whsro a large gathering of guests both ladies and gentlemen, had assembled. Tho orator described with graphic imagery the birth of the nation, but seeking to outdo in detail all predecessors, went so minutely and disgustingly into details, and so floridly described the actors therein that the female auditors shrieked, and a number of them fled deckwards, whilst several of tho male guests in the immediate vicinity of the speaker exerted themselves physically to suppress the speaker. The latter however, resisted with considerable vigor. A painful scene ensued, the incident acting as a damper on tho whole of the proceedings.
