Memorial Service. Whllfxgton, This Day.
The Governor, Mayor, Town Clerk, City Councillors, and also officers of the Mildura, which will then be in port, will attend the memorial service at St Paul's Pro Cathedral. The Bishop of Wellington will preach. At Wairoa all signs of mourning are visible, everywhere churches are arranging for memorial services on Sunday, and probably for kindred functions on the day of the funeral.
The Maoris are holding tangis, and have applied to (he Defence Minister for a supply of ammunition for volleys on the day appointed for her interment. Races Postponed. Auckland, This Day. The Takapuna races have been postponed till after the Queen's funeral. A Butcher's Dispute. Duxkdix, January 25. Tho Conciliation Board met to-day to hear the dispute botween tbeDunodin and Suburban Operative Butchers Union and tho Master Butchers. After the representatives of both parties had put their v:cw3 b -foro tho Board, it was agreed to hold a conference, the result being that later on it was announced an understanding had been arrived at with regard to the matters in dispute. The Union, however, has yet to notify its approval of the agreement. During the hearing of the case it was stated that notwithstanding tho large increase in the retail prices for meat, the butchering business did not pay, and it was stated in support that recently 12 butchers in tho city and suburbs had to give up business. N, Z. University. The Becsss Committeo of the Senate met this morning at the Otago University to consider tho results of the Matriculation and Junr. Scholarship, Solicitors general knowledge, and Medical Preliminary exams. There were present the Chancellor (Sir James Hector) Professors Shand, Sale and Cooke. The following have gained the Junior scholarships for tho year 1900, tho names being in tho order of merit: —llobcrtson ' Isabel, Grammar School Auckland, 4069 ; Lancaster John Gill, Boys High School Christchurch, 8872; Currie Archibald Ernest, Boys High School Christchurch, 3676: Jackson Francis Violet Josephine, Girls Collcgo Wanganui, 3469 ; Brailsford John Annesley, Wellington College, 8816; Dive Gilbert Henry, Collegiate School Wanganui, 8186; Cook Charles Frederick Danman, Christ's College Christchurch, 3181; Prior Norman Henry, Grammar School Auckland, 3169; Kippenberger Beatrice, Girls High School, Christchurch 8080; Kid>on Edward Boys College, Nelson, 3014; Wilson William Granmer, Boys School, Christchurco, 9985; Northcroft Hilda Margaret, Grammar School Auckland, 2983; Jones Phcebe Jessie, Girls High School Duncdin, 2965; Bolt Charles Norton, Kings College Auckland, '2353 ; Robertson Philip Wilfred Wellington College 2950. The Sixth Contingent. Wellington, January 26. It has been defhmtely decided that the Cornwall, with the Sixth Contingent aboard, shall leave for Auckland at six tomorrow morning. A beginning was made of the shipment of horses this afternoon.
