COMMONWEALTH CELEBRATIONS.

Sydney, January 50. The Right Hon Mr Seddon and Hon Mr Carroll are going into the question of arranging a meeting of native chiefs with reference to the great gathering of natives to welcome the Yorks.' Mr Seddon has received a letter from the Premier of Victoria enclosing a suggestion from the Trades Hall that the Imperial Government should be requested to take steps to legislate for the Orange and Transvaal colonies regarding labour. Natal and the Cape have legislation on the lines of New Zealand. Mr Seddon intends to consult his colleagues with the view of giving effect to the request of the Trades Hall. He desires the prohibition of forced labour amongst the natives, and prohibition of Asiaiics or contract labour from abroad, also prohibition of intoxicants from amongst the natives. Sailed, Waihora—Messrs O'Meara, Allen and Macruire, New Zealand legislators, are among the passengers.
