GOLD DREDGING NOTES
The Directors of the Prince nt Wales’ Dredging Company, at Rossi have cabled to Loudon £SOOO to pay for a steel dredge from Benshaw and Sons, Stokc-ou-Trent. The dredge is to bo delivered in thirty weeks. Mr McKay, Government Geologist, has given it as his opinion that the reefs on Mr Matthews’s property on the southwest side of the Wairarapa Lake (Otago) should be worked. A test made some years ago gave a return of 12dwt of gold to the ton. Word was received in town on Thursday (says the News), that the Duller Junction dredge, which is in the middle of its claim, is to start work immediately. The result of operations will be carefully noted by those who are anxious to know the value of the Duller as a dredging area. The new manager of the Mokoia dredge Mr William Crookston, has taken over the charge of the dredge, and is superintending the replacing of the buckets and elevator trap, which were removed jn order to facilitate relaunching. That work will take about a fortnight, after which the dredge will again bo ready for work. She is on the old spot, where good good gold was previously obtained, so shares should speedily rise in value. It is stated a dredge is being designed with duplicate ladder and buckets for a West Coast venture, the uppermost ladder to treat a thick layer of “pug” and the lower one to treat wash beneath. Mr Spencer Booth, sharebroker, of Wellington, intends leaving for London at the end of the month, with the object of introducing dredging ventures to London capitalists. He takes the option of several extensive dredging claims on the West Coast, which have been thoroughly tested. Mr Booth will do a good service to the industry if he can induce the induce the investment of British capital in it.
