A systematic collection of Boer families and stock at convenient centres is steadily proceeding. 1 oluntary refugees arc given advantages over families whose head is still with a commando. The refugees are mostly acquiescent to the action. Kitchener reports that 3,000 Boers arc at Carolina. Colville’s column were engaged at Vantonder shock. The Boers were driven off with heavy loss, 300 Boers looted Aberdeen, but retreated on the advance of 100 British. Willem Steyn, a peace delegate deputed to interview the Boers at Standerton, has been arrested and sent to 1 ict Relief on a charge of treason. A patrol of Prince Alfred’s Guards surrendered near Steynburg after tno hours’ fighting. The men were stripped and afterwards released. A commando has appeared at Little Namaqualand. The residents of Cape Peninsula, except the officials and soldiers have been forbidden to possess arms or ammunition. After February Ist all the colony, except a few towns, will be under martial law. It is intended to land additional naval guns at Capetown. Two of the largest commandos are stationed at Eosenkal, north-east Transvaal, and western Magaliesburg. It is expected that Botha is organising to raid Natal.
