Surrender of Cape Rebels.

Ignorance of the Boers.

London, January 16. Lord Kitchener reports that several small parties of raiders arc returning to Orange Biver. Some of the Cape rebels accompanying the rebels have surrendered. The War Office is enlisting 5000 Yeomanry for a year or tho duration of the war. London, January 16. 1000 Boer refugees are detained at the camps at Pretoria, Koonstaad, and Rhenoater Spruit. They declare that it is understood Kruger is still in the Transvaal, while De Wet was besieging Capetown, and General Buller was driven back in the Natal.

A squadron of Johannesburg Mounted Rifles ambushed a party of Boers at Halfontein on Sunday, killing five, includiog Commandant Vanderhein. A sharp fight occurred at Murraysburg on the Hth. Six British were killed and seventeen wounded, while five are missing chiefly of the South African Light Horse and Brabant's Horse. Lieut Keddell, a New Zealand Rough Rider, was severely wounded at Ventersdorp. Trooper M. Boyce, a N.Z. Bough Rider, died of enteric fever, at Pretoria.

Surgeon Godfrey, N.Z. Mounted Infantry, has returned to duty. 120 German farmers have joined the Cape Suburban Guard. The Cape Cyclist Corps number 300. Mulholland, the American millionaire, invited Kruger to visit and lecture in America. Melbourne, January 17. Sir A. Milner has cabled that the Orient will convey the Victorian contingent to South Africa.
