WRECK OF MAIL STEAMER RUSSIE.
(PER PRHS3 ASSOCIATION.-—COPYRIGHT.)
London, January 12. The mail boat Russie, running between Oran and Algeria, was wrecked at Faraman Rocks off Marseilles in a high sea which battled all efforts at rescue. The passengers and crew numbering 100 were rescued after four days clinging to the wreck. The details show that the vessel was falling to pieces aft since Monday. The hull was rolling about in the sea. The invading passengers were half starved. They were lashed occasionally to the rigging. Superhuman efforts were made to rescue them. They were watched with frenzy and suspense. The forehold on Thursday alone was dry, the bulkhead _ and watertight compartments preventing a collapse. The wind having shifted, the lifeboats were able to get to the wreck, and rescored all aboard at dawn on Friday - The disaster was due to mistaking the Faramen for the Plenier lights. Twenty steamers have been lost previously, many with all hands.
