A beginning will bo made next week to lay the portion of the Cape Cable between Durban and Mauritius. New Zealand Troopers Returning. Sydney, This Day. The New Zealand Troops from South Africa leave for New Zealand by.the steamer Orient on Saturday. The steamer first goes to Brisbane and thence direct to Dunedin. A Corroboree. Advantage was taken of the presence of Blacks at Sydney to hold a’ corroboree and display of boomerang and spear throwing and sham tight at Botany. A large gathering took place of those interested in the display. Disastrous Fire. A destructive bush tire occurred at Riverina. Many thousands of acres of grass and a large quantity of stacked wheat were destroyed. Coal Famine. The difficulty in the Newcastle collieries is practically settled. Only two ,mines arc not working. There is an unprecedented demand for coal, and a famine exists in Adelaide and Melbourne where prices are up to £3 per ton.
