GREY MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Monday January 7th

(Before R. S. Hawkins, Esq.. S.M.)

National Bank v. Estate of North and Wyldc—Claim for £2O. Ml' .Hannan, who appeared for plaintiff, applied for an adjournment till the afternoon. When again called on at the date of adjournment, it was upon Mr Hannan's application struck out. P.Keonan v. V. Eider—A claim for £l4 lGs, share of work done in a contract, or of wages due. Mr Hannan appeared for plaintiff and Mr Murdoch for dcfcndaht. This was a very complicated dispute, in which one material witness directly contradicted the statement of the other. Mr Hannan called P. Rider who stated that lie along with others had the contract, and in the general settlement £l4 16s was due to the plaintiff. This amount witness paid over to Donoghue. Donoghue, in his evidence, swore that Rider gave him a cheque for £G9 odd, but that upon cashing the same the next day he gave Rider back the £l4 16s, as he (witness) had nothing to do with it, and Rider was then proceeding to Kumara where Keenan stayed.

A good deal of other evidence of a very contradictory nature was given by three other witnesses. The Council addressed the Court at considerable length on the merits of the case. The Magistrate commented very severely upon the conflicting nature of the evidence, stating that perjury had undoubtedly been committed by one or other of the witnesses. -He would take time to consider his decision.
